This western series aired on HBO is set in the town of Deadwood, South Dakota, which at the time was a cesspool of heinous crimes and political corruption.
John Reid was a Texas Ranger. He and five others were riding along one day, when suddenly they were ambushed by a gang of outlaws. Everyone was killed, one of whom was his older brother Daniel. But, Reid managed to survive, and soon an indian named Tonto came to his aid and nursed him back to health. They say he made his mask from the vest of his fallen brother, and when he buried the dead he made a sixth grave so that no one would know he lived.
Mr. Autry was born Orvan Grover Autry near Tioga, Texas. When he graduated high school he went from a railroad worker, to telegrapher, then finally sang for a local radio station. In 1931
he had gotten his own show "The Gene Autry Show" and starred in his first movie "In Old Sante Fe" in 1934. He was also a writer of over two-hundred songs.
