Robert Selden Duvall was born in San Diego, California to William H. Duvall, a U. S. Navy admiral, and Mildred Virginia, an amateur actress, on January 5, 1931.
Mr. Duvall attended various schools in Maryland and graduated from Principia College, Elsah, Illinois, in 1953. Upon graduation from college Robert Duvall served a one year hitch in the U. S. Army. After discharge from the Army, Duvall studied acting in New York and worked as a postal clerk in Manhattan.
Robert Duvall began his acting career in theatre, both on and off Broadway. In 1959, Duvall made his first television appearance on Armstrong Circle Theatre.

During the 1960s, he appeared regularly as a guest actor on such shows as The Untouchables, Route 66, The Fugitive, The Mod Squad and The Twilight Zone.
Robert Duvall's screen debut came with "To Kill A Mockingbird" in 1962 and continued with some of the more notable films in which Duvall appeared in the 1960s, including Captain Newman, M.D. (1963), The Rain People (1969), and the western classic, True Grit (1969) in which Duvall's character, Ned Pepper engaged John Wayne (Rooster Cogburn) in a climatic shootout on horseback. |
Robert Duvall made his mark on American films in the 1970s, first as Major Frank Burns in the movie MASH and later in The Godfather and The Godfather Part II for which he received Oscar nominations. Duvall also receivd an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Apocalypse Now (1979).
Duvall continued to appear in important films during the 1980s, including The Natural (1984) and
Colors (1988).

Duvall won an Academy Awary for Best Actor for his performance as a country western singer in Tender Mercies (1983).
In 1989, Robert Duvall appeared as Augustus "Gus" McCrae, a former Texas Ranger, in the awarding winning western mini-series Lonesome Dove, which also featured a good friend, Tommy Lee Jones. Even though Lonesome Dove was a TV mini-series, Duvall's performance made him a western actor hero.
Throughout the 1990s, Duvall maintained an active film career including, The Apostle (1997) and Deep Impact (1998). |
